A spiritual leader can be many different kinds of people. A spiritual leader is someone you go to for advice on how to feel more connected. How to feel more connect with yourself, the people are you, and the universe.

Human beliefs differ. Some people go to church to fulfill their spiritual needs, while others turn to a yoga practice. Some people do both!

Yoga teachers are spiritual leaders. If you are a yoga teacher reading this, YOU are a spiritual leader!

Yes, of course yoga teachers are expected to know how to teach asanas, or poses, but yoga is so much more than a physical practice. It is truly a spiritual practice.

Even in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, essentially the guide the yoga, the second of 196 sutras is “yogas chitta vritti nirodhah,” which means the stilling of the mind. It means to have the ability to direct your mind consciously.

It doesn’t yet mention anything about postures. This is for a very good reason – yoga is truly about the mind.

There are doctors who help people with their physical symptoms, and can prescribe physical therapy. There are also psychiatrists, who help people with their mental stability.

But, who do people turn to when they need help with their spirituality?

Often, people turn to yoga teachers.

In the yoga world, there is an extended focus on energy bodies and how to work with them.

From the Chakras, Bandhas & Gunas, to the Koshas, Doshas, and Nadi’s.

People turn to yoga teachers when are searching for answers no one else can give them.

Yoga is a spiritual practice – and yoga teachers are spiritual leaders.

  1. Wow very interesting article. I had never thought of yoga teachers as spiritual leaders in the past but when explained simply I can see how yoga can help your soul and those that teach it deliver this energy and knowledge.

    1. Thank you Madeleine! There can’t be enough spiritual leaders on this planet! Especially through all of the hustle and bustle in today’s society. I’m glad you enjoyed the read. Let me know if you have any questions!

  2. Years ago I went to a weekly yoga class in my homecountry. It was great, because I was a young, working mother and this hour was my relaxation time. I can’t remember though there was ever one word said about spirituality. This can either have been because I never asked anything. Or it can be the teacher (who was a really pleasant and friendly old lady) didn’t want to be a spiritual leader. I have no idea.
So your article made me rethink yoga. 🙂

    1. Hi Hannie,

I am so grateful that this article made you rethink what yoga really is! Every teacher does things differently, but connection to one’s self and the universe through spirituality is my main focus. Yoga is so much more than the poses! And today, everyone is looking for something more. Yoga can be that something!
